How Teeth Whitening in Puerto Vallarta Works

Professional whitening uses a peroxide gel to break down the stain molecules inside the enamel. Most surface stains come from coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco. Deeper yellowing comes with age as enamel thins and the darker dentin shows through. Both respond well to professional treatment, and both are safer under supervision than with strong over-the-counter products.

At Éclat Smiles & Aesthetic, you can choose between two professional options: Zoom® in-office whitening at $240 USD per session, and a standard professional whitening session at $140 USD.

Zoom whitening: results in one visit

Zoom® is done in the chair. Your lips and gums are protected, a professional-strength gel goes on your teeth, and a special light speeds up the process. A typical session takes about an hour, with the gel refreshed in several short cycles. Philips, the maker of Zoom®, reports results of up to eight shades lighter in a single visit. Your result depends on your starting shade and the type of stain.

Zoom® suits visitors well because you leave with the result the same day.

Take-home trays: gradual and easy to maintain

Take-home whitening uses custom-fitted trays and a lower-concentration gel worn at home, usually for one to two weeks. Results build more slowly, but the trays are useful for touch-ups. Many patients combine both: Zoom® for the immediate result, then trays a few times a year to keep it.

What to avoid after whitening

Right after whitening, enamel is more porous and picks up color more easily. For the first 48 hours, follow a "white diet": skip coffee, black tea, red wine, cola, berries, soy sauce and tomato sauces. In Puerto Vallarta, that also means waiting on agua de jamaica, mole, chamoy and dark salsas. Tequila on the rocks, white fish, rice, chicken and fresh coconut water are all fine.

Avoid smoking during this window too. It's one of the fastest ways to undo a fresh result.

Will whitening make my teeth sensitive?

Some sensitivity is common, especially after in-office whitening. It usually feels like a brief zing with cold drinks or air and fades within a day or two. A toothpaste with potassium nitrate, used for a week or two before treatment, helps many people. Tell your dentist in advance if you already have sensitive teeth so they can adjust the plan.

Whitening before veneers or crowns

Whitening only works on natural teeth. Crowns, veneers, bonding and fillings keep their original shade. If you're planning veneers or crowns on some teeth, whiten first. Your dentist can then match the new restorations to your brighter natural shade instead of your old one. This is an easy step to miss and costly to fix later.

When to book on your trip

Book whitening early in your stay, ideally within the first two or three days. You'll have the white diet behind you before your big dinners and photos, and any sensitivity will be gone by the time you're back on the beach.

Who should wait

Whitening isn't recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with untreated cavities, exposed roots or active gum disease. A quick exam before treatment makes sure your teeth and gums are ready.

How long the results last

Professional whitening usually lasts from six months to two years, depending on diet and habits. Rinsing with water after coffee or wine, keeping up regular cleanings, and an occasional touch-up with trays help results last much longer.
